Book Thief – Language

“She caught him thinking it” You can’t catch someone thinking but rather the characteristics of them thinking – solid stare at something slight squint, hand on chin. Opposite of Metonymy?

“She was watching the words” Imagining reading, showing her excitement for this new skill and the significance literature will play for Liesel throughout this story.

“m idnight class began at the end of each nightm are” Interesting contrast – Points out the negative nightmare side and the positive learning side, showing that Liesel is both troubled and feels somewhat at home.

“quiet voices were loud” Oxymoron enhancing the pervious page’s contrast. a) Loud is referring to a lot and there were many quiet voices shared throughout the early hours

b) The voices that were meant to be quiet and secretive ended up loud, reflecting the excitement/pleasure of these classes possibly both

“Uppercut words. “Like y ou could read so m uch, y ou Saukerl. ” The kitchen waited. Papa counterpunched.” Boxing

“carry ing the words, the m usic, the washing. ”

Listing a group of things. Listing is generally a group of similar ‘genre’ or ‘themed’ things however the words and music are activities while the washing is a chore and after thought not the purpose of this journey.
It is also impossible to carry words and music – A metaphor and something else?

“you must make sure you use a good shovel” She is about to dig herself into a hole

“You m ust dig deep; y ou cannot be lazy . You cannot cut corners.” Irony – Exactly what she is doing right now

“clouds stum bled in and assem bled stupidly in the sky … Great obese clouds … Dark and plum p.” Personification. Also symbolism – the clouds signify the trouble Liesel is about to come across as clouds are dark gloomy and ‘block out the sun’.
